I'm dealing with a pickle since I have encountered problems starting with my
primary HDD seemingly slowing down on performance. A few weeks ago, I
noticed that the HDD has been slow to boot but since this was running
Windows I thought it might be a software problem which I promised to resolve
after the holidays by using an image I made using clonezilla.
I got a notification for a security update via Windows automatic updates
which prompted me to reboot my PC so I did. After that reboot, the system
slowed down & I tried another reboot to see if that fixes the problem. It
turned worse since now the system is showing random errors like Error
Operating System Not Loaded or No Operating System Found or it is just not
being detected.
I feel that it may be a HDD problem since this is the first time I have used
an IDE Western Digital which apparently is not as robust as my 40GB Seagate
which I used as a scratchdrive for keeping track of torrent files.
Right now, I am in the process of reinstalling windows and as soon as the
error checking of another Western Digital 1.5TB drive is finished I am
disconnecting them for the meantime.
Since I have 3.5TB worth of data spread across 3 drives that I'd really love
to keep, I was wondering if I can run a homebrewed NAS using an Atom-based
system. I've been reading about FreeNAS but it uses ZFS and I'd like to keep
the FS on the drives intact.
Has anyone else made their own personal NAS system using Ubuntu?
