Hello list,

I have a problem in shutting down or restarting my ubuntu 10.04 from the
menu (sometimes) . After clicking the button, it redirects me to the login
screen which is really weird. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Thanks

Here's a weird workaround from somebody who experienced the same
problem<http://www.ecalpemos.org/2010/05/ubuntu-1004-lucid-will-not-shut-down.html>
:

*Getting the laptop to shut down*
Right click on the bar at the top of the screen select "Add to panel" and
add the power off button. This seems to shut down the power OK.

I never experienced this, though.

It's probably an Indicator Applet Session 0.3.7 bug so you need to use
another panel applet (like the "Shut down..." applet) to shut your computer
down. I never experienced it, though.

In some desperate situation(no GUI), it is required to type the "sudo shutdown -h now" or "sudo reboot"command at the shell.

backup your /boot/grub/menu.lst
add the option acpi=force

some boards are not acpi compliant...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think this may be a driver issue since the
time when I can't shutdown/restart my laptop, audio's not working, usb
storage auto mount does not work and there's a lot of error found when I
type dmesg after inserting a pcmcia device.

Might as well revert back to ubuntu 9.10 since that was the version that my
laptop works well. Thanks again. hope my laptop will work out of the box
when 10.10 comes out.

on my case, i only use LTS versions. am still on 8.04 though since i'm
waiting for 10.04 to "stabilize".. i get updates almost everyday on a
10.04 (it's running on a test vm inside an 8.04 host :)

if your acpi is not compliant, your devices will be affected too. mine
wont even boot unless i turn off acpi in boot options, iianm, noacpi
acpi=off.

new linux distro will activate acpi using the new acpi specs. if your
hardware is not compliant, expect surprises.... you'll be stuck on
older distros...

try setting off acpi first before reinstalling to an older distro,..

see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

1 try first the steps under "Change Boot Options Temporarily For An
Existing Installation"
2 if #1 confirms the behaviour, then do the final steps under "Change
Boot Options Permanently On An Existing Installation"

Or maybe it's an update problem? Fresh install has a higher success rate
than upgrade (anecdotally speaking) :-)

Hi,

I experienced the same problem as well. Editing the /etc/default/grub file
might work.

Do the following:

1) sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

2) Change the following line on the /etc/default/grub file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

Change it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi=force"

Cheers,
PJ

I think that defeats the purpose of resolving the currently installed

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
Post by PJ Bacolod
Change it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi=force"
Thanks PJ, this did the trick.

By adding acpi=force, USB storage devices will now auto mount, volume/sounds
works, shutdown/restart button now works. Did a couple of restarts &
shutdowns problems now gone.

I also tried what sir botp suggested by turning off acpi I just added
acpi=off in /etc/default/grub file: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet
acpi=off" before using acpi=force everything seems to work except during
shutdowns where my system halts.

Thanks for the help guys.

I think that's what happens when acpi is off. System just halted upon
