[Ubuntu-PH] Downgrading from Meerkat to Lynx

I wiped my whole drive and reinstalled Lynx since Meerkat could not load a
module properly. If I ever need to upgrade back to Meerkat but wish to go
back to Lynx, is there a way to go back without reinstalling the whole thing
again?

I think it is not possible to downgrade as much as we can not downgrade from
Windows 7 to Windows Vista. OSes are one path only? upgrade. Newer
versions changes a lot of things (and deletes a lot too) which makes the
downgrade path very messy so no one is creating a downgrade option. (That's
how I understand the logic behind it.)

It is actually possible, Google for "apt pinning".

Of course, dragons lay in wait. That's why most just tend to restart from
scratch.

Excellent! I will try this as soon as I am done customizing Lynx.

That's too bad. I guess the other way is not as intrusive but at least Lynx
is still supported till 2013. If I understand correctly does this only do
security updates? I was wondering if I need to update the kernel, does Lynx
support kernel updates via Synaptic even if Meerkat is now the newer
version?

Hi,

I have never tried downgrading Ubuntu without touching the system in whole

I read about this but since I just started Linux (again) I opted to
experiment while I still have the time. Perhaps tact and being cautious is
what I need to think of when upgrading.

Yep, very true.

For most organizations and users, sticking to an LTS release is much
better in the long-run (and should be less of a headache too). LTS
users can upgrade straight to the next LTS release anyway (or do a fresh
install).

The rest, ie the geeks, they can join the 6-month cycle. For the devs,
they're always at alpha stage :p

According to this site: http://jaqque.sbih.org/kplug/apt-pinning.html
Apt pinning allows you to access the latest updates without compromising the stability of your system. When it is enabled, you can have lynx installed but can access Meerkat's latest updates but this will only apply to applications(non critical updates) only. So if iamthechickengod at gmail.com 's module is a driver module, this may serve him best.

However, ubuntu recommends backports rather than apt-pinning:

It is actually possible, Google for "apt pinning".

Of course, dragons lay in wait. That's why most just tend to restart from scratch.
